Personally what would help me (an Aucklander) use Te Huia is more of a 2-way timetable. As it's currently set up Te Huia very much has the appearance of a train intended for Waikato residents to travel to and from Auckland, not the other way around. Run some trains going the other way at times that make sense and you'd have people visiting Hamilton using it.

This is a rather painful observation, but what could end upon giving Te Huia the patronage boost it so desperately needs is if the war in Iran and the closure of the Straits of Hormuz continues long enough that the bite of high fuel prices makes it harder to drive between Auckland and Hamilton, incentivizing people to use Te Huia because it would be less costly to take the train between the two urban centres. Events like those currently unfolding in the Middle East are precisely why New Zealand needs a solid investment in rail and other non-petrol-powered transport systems.
